'Wear and tear' takes it's toll as ex-pro becomes lead coach

2018 1st XI captain Will Owen will step up to be 'lead coach' for the side in 2019.

The influential all-rounder who played a significant part in Chester's 2017 double winning side and led the team to the runners-up spot last year will take on coaching duties after an impressive career.

"I'm really looking forward to my new coaching role," commented Will. "I've thoroughly enjoyed my four years playing at Chester but I can't deny the wear and tear on my body is beginning to tell.

"Helping players improve - particularly the youngsters - and working with Rick Moore to get the best out of everyone is a natural progression and I hope my experience from many years as a pro and playing at Chester can be of benefit."

Will was also keen to point out the importance of players keeping fit and looking after their bodies while playing competitive sport.

"The constant treadmill of sport needs to be carefully monitored," he said. "I know that from playing cricket for so many years. I'm still young but want to ensure my body is fit and healthy for my future. Look at the recent news from Andy Murray where tennis has given him a great career but destroyed his body. It's an important balance to maintain."

The popular Welshman joined Chester in 2015 having previously played first class cricket with Glamorgan and had an immediate impact, his significant experience vital in developing our youngsters.

Coaching duties will be intensive but it'll be a juggling job for Will first off as he will marry long time girlfriend, Holly Huson in April.
