We reflect on the life of Phill Evans who passed away on 3 January 2019

Details of how we'll be celebrating the life of Phill Evans appear at the end of this appreciation.

Phill Evans (1956-2019). An appreciation

There are few people associated with our Club unaware of Phill’s love for all things Chester Boughton Hall.

In recent years, Phill held many formal – and informal – posts at Chester, immersed in football and cricket throughout the respective seasons. Living on the ground since its redevelopment in 2002, Phill was a constant presence in the Clubhouse.

Born in Wellington, Shropshire in 1956, Phill, his brother Chris and father Frank spent their working lives with British Telecom, Phill taking retirement in 2013. Frank’s move from the family home to Chester saw Phill arrive to explore the local cricket and football scene.

It didn’t take long for him to become actively involved. He captained Christleton CC’s 1st XI and played football for Chester Nomads. His leadership qualities eventually saw him manage Nomads’ Sunday morning football team.

He switched his cricketing allegiance to Chester Boughton Hall, captaining the 3rd and 4th XIs as well as leading the midweek Nomads side. In later years he returned to help manage the 4th XI and he was an active and key club member behind the scenes throughout.

His roles included Cricket Chairman for nine years until 2004 and he took on the role of Bar Chairman when the new clubhouse was built in 2002. Phill was also a director of Chester Boughton Hall Limited for many years and remained actively involved in club administration after falling ill.

Phill passed away on 3 January 2019 finally losing his battle to illness after two and a half years. He fought valiantly, exceeding life expectations, his immersion in sport helping him enjoy his latter years. He continued to follow local and national action avidly, watching Chester FC when possible.

Phill’s legacy at Boughton Hall lives on through his sons Tom and Bobby and through the twinkling eyes of his granddaughter Scarlett, born to Bobby and Sophie in 2015.

We know he’ll continue to keep a keen eye on our performances from afar as his enthusiasm will live on through the spirit of the Club.
