Our Phil reports on England v India down under last week

Finn and Bell may get the headlines, but Jimmy Anderson makes the difference.

After five overs India were 1-1 and under pressure. On a wicket that suited England's attack , pace, bounce and a little movement, India were up against it. They did make a recovery of sorts, before the innings fell apart after Rahane's dreadful shot. He has batted well for months in Australia and was doing so again. So a premeditated hoick in Finn's opening over was against the grain.

Binny and Dohni batted well, but, nowhere near well enough to make any effect on an obvious outcome. Buttler played his part and a couple of great catches in the outfield emphasised the oldest cliché in the game, that 'catches win matches'.

Ian Bell then looked absolute class. India's attack looked toothless. Dohni's captaincy was bewildering. He allowed the batsmen to do as they pleased. He was in a very difficult position, but India needed wickets. Do something. Don't allow the batsmen to play down the field for a comfortable single four times an over.

A very pleasing and satisfying day for England and the Barmies, particularly as Bell and Taylor had both been dismissed in the first over last Friday. Great to get Stephen Finn firing and back on track, but Jimmy makes a massive difference.
