Lee Dixon reports on the inaugural Chester v Hyde masters...

Saturday saw several members of Chester take part in a golf match against our great rivals and friends Hyde, at Portal Golf Club.

With the handicapper frantically putting the matches together, everyone looked forward to a good game.

Conditions were good, good to soft in places and when the club professional finally arrived minus a golf bag it, looked like we may not have been as prepared as we hoped.

The match ebbed and flowed with players finding the greens tough and Ian Linwood in particular managing to get best value of shots for his course entrance fee.

Tom and Bob Evans fell 5 and 4 in the first match, and the Wiltshire boys Christian and Aidie managed to pick up the second match quite comfortably.

The big shock came in match three where Hyde's pairing of Tipper snr and jr were strong favourites to beat Rick and the free spirit Clarky, Falling 2 and 1. CBH 2-1 Hyde

It was all going so well, when the key match of Sawas and Alcock edged ahead of Goodwin and Linwood, meaning the final two matches would have a massive effect on the scoreboard.

Match 5 saw Club Captain Chris Fleet and Andy Brain take on Hyde Chairman Paul Chorlton and Ashy. Now this was a nail biter with the Hyde pair going 1 up with1 to play. Chum had a putt on the last for the point til Fleety sunk a six footer to claim a half point.

The last match saw Dixon and Rowland vs Berry and Brierly. The first hole saw the Wirral based pair take a lead, this was the only lead they had and were one down after nine.

The Hyde pair started to fire as the CBH pairing, both off 28 struggled with most aspects of the game in the holes after the break. 5 and 4 ment Hyde had taken the prize 3 1/2- 2 1/2.

A fantastic day between two clubs who seem to enjoy a very healthy rivalry on the field but a great friendship off it.

Onto next year and the exciting trip to Royal Werneth Low for the rematch.

And the great news that we have got Tiger Woods to come and play in the 4th team so will be eligible!
