Draw at Toft

By

Batters post a total before Fisher takes another six but a draw.

With weather around of the damp precipitous variety, the full hundred overs seemed unlikely as Dan Riley lost the toss and Chester were inserted. The wicket was very green and very close to the imposing oak trees which line the far side of Toft's picturesque ground. Eddie Roberts away at a football sticker convention so Matty Brayne back to open the bowling (after tea). Toft were run away league winners in 2017 and some of their stars were involved although perhaps their key bowler was at Chester taking 5 wickets.
After the batting debacle that was the opening two games of the season, George and Ian came together to open the batting and have done brilliantly ever since. They both set about the business of run getting with their usual calmness and the score ticked over slowly in the face of some accurate Nigel Muirhead spin and some medium pace form the other end. The second consecutive 50 partnership as George drove sweetly and Ian cut away anything loose. They seem to like to stay together and were out to consecutive deliveries with a symmetrical 24 apiece - both nearing 300 runs for the season. Batting is about many things technically but in the second Xl we love a partnership. Dil and Noah got to work on building another significant one. Noah belies his meagre years and at only just 14, he looks every inch the quality batsman he is becoming. His next test was to follow up his half century from the previous week with some more runs. Dil is watchful and murderous on anything loose - he unfurled two mighty sixes but also dropped and ran very well with Noah to keep the score board rolling over (digitally). Noah fell for an excellent run-a-ball 33 breaking the 75 run stand. Dil (47) top scored in an innings which set a total to bowl at. Platform set for Wiggy? He batted sensibly for his 34 (from 24 balls) before holing out on the boundary, a good return to run scoring for the player of the season from last year. The tail rather fell away but after 50 overs, 196 was on the board. Perhaps 20 runs shy of where it could have been but 180 seemed par. Rain. Lots of rain to accompany a plentiful tea at which a number of youngsters managed at least 3 scones.
Sam and Brayno opened up and bowled good lines for the most part with little margin for error with the short boundary looming but at 50 for 0 after 9, the score was positively bubbling along and something needed to change. In truth Maddock looked anything but comfortable but he was still there. Craig out in the tenth to Sam LBW and then Fisher came on to replace Brayno who had beaten the bat on numerous occasions.
The game continued to ebb and flow as Rob Fisher started to take wickets regularly with Dan at the other end drying up the runs. Maddock eventually out LBW to Fish for 25 from 25...overs. Wiggy replaced Dan to get a wicket which he did bowling the dangerous Ashley for 12. Fisher took his fifth as Sam returned and 2 wickets were needed from the last ten with Fisher bowled out having taken 6 for 30 from his 15. Dan and Sam couldn't eek out the wicket. Toft decided to settle for a draw and on a tame wicket, chances were at a premium. Draw.
Considering we lost what looked like quite a key toss, a draw was disappointing but has to be taken as a compliment having dominated the game for large parts.

MotM - Robin Fisher who did reasonably well again (21 wickets at 4 so far this year in the league).
DotD - Noah Vickery for suggesting Warren Goodwin was 'overrated' amongst other misdemeanours.
